Ancient Banyan Tree Toppled by Strong Winds in Kempanur

A 300-year-old banyan tree fell in Kempanur near Thondamuthur due to strong winds, causing significant local disturbance but no injuries reported.

Coimbatore: A banyan tree, estimated to be around 300 years old, was uprooted in Kempanur near the Thondamuthur area following strong wind conditions. Located near the bus station in Kempanur, the tree was a historically significant and spiritual site where local residents, from elders to children, often gathered. The tree housed a Vinayagar idol under it, serving as a place of worship for the community.

In recent weeks, the area has experienced severe evening and night rains. On the evening of May 15, intensified winds led to the banyan tree collapsing across the road. Fortunately, there were no individuals underneath the tree at the time of the incident, preventing potential casualties. However, an electricity pole was damaged during the fall, leading to a disruption in power supply. Electricity board workers promptly responded by cutting off the power to avert any accidents and later removed the tree with the help of revenue department officials.

The fall of the tree has deeply saddened the local community, who regarded it as a symbol of their heritage. The incident has stirred significant emotions among the residents, who mourn the loss of their cherished banyan tree.
