Farmers Petition Revenue Office as Stray Dogs Harm Livestock in Dharapuram

In Dharapuram near Tirupur, farmers petitioned the revenue officer due to increasing attacks by stray dogs on goats, affecting their livelihood. Immediate action requested.

Tirupur: Residents of Kolathupalayam in Dharapuram near Tirupur have filed a petition with the local revenue office, led by Bharatiya Janata Party leader Karthikeyan from East Union, Tirupur South District.

The complaint arises from an ongoing issue where stray dogs are attacking and killing goats, severely impacting the farmers’ ability to sustain their traditional livelihood. More than 150 farmers in the region, spanning areas like Kulukkupalayam and Thiruvalluvar Nagar, raise livestock including meat and dairy goats. These animals are grazed in nearby forests during the day and secured in bamboo enclosures at night.

However, over the past month alone, farmers have reported multiple instances where stray dogs have killed a significant number of their livestock: 21 goats in Idaisamy’s garden, four in Muthu's possession, five belonging to Lingasamy, three owned by Peter Kumar, four by Balu, and three by Nattu Thurai, totaling 45 goats killed.

Due to the severity of these incidents, the community's ability to continue goat farming is under threat, which has been the backbone of their economy. The petition explicitly requests immediate measures to control the stray dog population and calls for compensation for the farmers whose goats were killed. Following the submission, the Dharapuram Revenue Officer Govindasamy stated that the petition would be escalated to the District Collector and that measures will be initiated to address this grave situation.
