Public Detains Dharapuram Revenue Officer, Vellakovil Panchayat Leader Protests by Sitting in River

In Pudupai, public detained Dharapuram Revenue Officer over alleged unauthorized water extraction issues at Amaravathi River. Vellakovil Panchayat Leader Venkatesh Sudarshan protested by sitting in the river, causing significant local unrest.

Coimbatore: Tension gripped Pudupai, near Kangayam in Tirupur district after locals, accusing the authorities of unauthorized water extraction from the Amaravathi River, detained Dharapuram Revenue Officer Govindasamy during a road blockade. This incident occurred following the public's discovery of illicit well construction intended to divert water to Moolanur in Dharapuram.

Following prolonged negotiations attended by Vellakovil Inspector Gnanaprakash and Revenue Officer Govindasamy, the crowds, demanding immediate action, subdued only when the officials consented to seal the illegally constructed wells. In a dramatic gesture, Vellakovil Union Panchayat Leader Venkatesh Sudarshan sat in the Amaravathi River in protest against the water misappropriation, spotlighting the critical water scarcity impacting thousands of households in the region.

This public outrage has spotlighted the frequent unauthorized extractions and the urgent need for systemic reforms to safeguard water resources. The incident reveals the deep-rooted issues surrounding water management and the urgent calls for accountability and sustainable practices in rural Tamil Nadu.
