Coimbatore District Collector Advises Public to Avoid Ponds and Pits for Swimming

Following a tragic incident where three students drowned in Mundanthurai Dam, Coimbatore District Collector warns against swimming in deep water bodies amid increasing temperatures.

Coimbatore: Coimbatore District Collector, Kranthi Kumar Pati, issued a safety warning today, April 24, urging the public, especially students, to avoid swimming in ponds, pits, and other water bodies in the district.

This cautionary directive comes after a heartrending incident in which three students from a local government school drowned at Mundanthurai Dam near Perumal Temple in Teettipalayam during a swim. The province is experiencing higher temperatures, posing severe risks in natural water bodies, which may contain hidden pits or dangerous mud conditions leading to possible fatalities.

To enhance safety, the Public Works Department, Water Resources Department, and Village Panchayats are directed to install warning signs in all major water bodies deeper than 10 feet within the district. The public is strongly advised to refrain from swimming, fishing, or engaging in other recreational activities in rivers, ponds, and pits to avoid similar tragic incidents. The safety of the community is a priority, and compliance with these guidelines is crucial for preventing further mishaps.
