Grand Celebrations at Udumalai Mariamman Temple Chariot Festival

Devotees performed parrot kavadi and alagu kuthu rituals during the Mariamman Temple Chariot Festival in Udumalai, marking a culturally significant day filled with traditional festivities on September 25.


Coimbatore: The Udumalai Mariamman Temple's annual chariot festival, a significant event awaited by devotees began with fasting rituals on September 9, culminating in the grand chariot procession on September 25. Accompanying the main festival, a colorful spectacle unfolded as devotees carried out the traditional 'Parrot Kavadi and pierced their bodies with hooks in a display of devotion and endurance organized by the Sabari Sabaripatti Uzhavarapanni Peravai.






The procession began near the central bus station in Udumalai, initiated by Raja Saravana Swamigal of Koonampatti. More than 20 devotees participated, suspended from cranes by hooks pierced into their skin, embodying devout spirits as they moved through streets carrying swords and dancing ecstatically. The vehicles, decorated vividly, traversed from old bus station through Thali Road, North Kuttai Street, Sadhasivam Street, and Thangammal Oda Street, ending at Mariamman Temple.



This display was not only a testament to their unyielding faith but also an intense visual spectacle, drawing several onlookers who lined the streets, their senses heightened by the rhythmic beats of drums and traditional instruments. Prior to the bird kavadi procession, over a hundred women participated in 'mulaipaari' rituals, and men danced Devarattam, adding to the festival's fervor. The arrangements for the bird kavadi were meticulously managed by Sabarimalai Sabari Patti Uzhavarapanni Peravai officials, including Rajan and Arputharaj, ensuring the event’s success and spiritual ambiance.
