NHAI to Lay Four-Lane Road from Kurumbapalayam to Sathyamangalam, Upgrades En Route to Karnataka

As reported first by SimpliCity last year about the 96 km road expansion in Sathy Road, the NHAI, in collaboration with the district administrations of Coimbatore and Erode, aims to acquire 731 acres of land to facilitate this ambitious four-lane road project. The plan also involves setting up two toll plazas along the 98-kilometer stretch from Kurumbapalayam to the state border

Coimbatore: The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is set to enhance road connectivity between Coimbatore and Karnataka by constructing a four-lane road from Kurumbapalayam in Coimbatore district to Sathyamangalam in Erode district, subsequently upgrading the road to Bannari and further till the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka inter-state border. This project includes the expansion of the existing Dhimbam ghat road along this route.

In a significant infrastructural push, the NHAI, in collaboration with the district administrations of Coimbatore and Erode, aims to acquire 731 acres of land to facilitate this ambitious four-lane road project. The plan also involves setting up two toll plazas along the 98-kilometer stretch from Kurumbapalayam to the state border, marking a pivotal step towards managing the increasing vehicular traffic and enhancing road safety.

The current two-lane road connecting Coimbatore to Sathyamangalam (NH 209) frequently faces traffic congestion during peak hours, with certain segments being notoriously narrow and prone to accidents. Despite previous plans for expansion, including a feasibility study initiated by the Union government, the project had been stalled until the NHAI recently decided to proceed with the construction of the four-lane road starting from Kurumbapalayam.

An NHAI official detailed the project, stating, "The construction will commence near Kovilpalayam, utilizing the current roadway while also acquiring adjacent land for two service roads, broadening the road width to 60 meters until Sathyamangalam." The official further noted the potential construction of flyovers to alleviate congestion, while highlighting the limitations faced in expanding the Sathyamangalam-Bannari stretch due to the proximity of the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve. However, efforts to widen the road through the reserve forest from seven to ten meters are underway, ensuring minimal environmental disruption.

The upgrade from Bannari to the Tamil Nadu-Karnataka border on the Dhimbam ghat road is part of a comprehensive project, estimated to cost over 1,200 crore, designed to facilitate smoother travel between Coimbatore and Karnataka. "With the Union government's funding, we'll collaborate with the respective district administrations for land acquisition, ensuring a significant reduction in traffic upon completion," the NHAI official added.

Parallel to the NHAI's project, the NH wing of the state highways department plans to expand the road from Gandhipuram to Kurumbapalayam, further easing traffic congestion on the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam stretch.
