Special Police Squad Cracks Down on Jewelry Theft at Koniyaamman Temple Festival in Coimbatore

In a proactive operation, a special police team in Coimbatore apprehended three women suspected of jewelry theft during the crowded Koniyaamman Temple chariot festival, recovering 20 sovereigns of stolen jewelry.

Coimbatore, February 24 - Coimbatore's Koniyaamman Temple chariot festival became the focus of a significant police operation aimed at curbing the spate of jewelry thefts exploiting the crowd's chaos. Under the directive of City Police Commissioner Balakrishnan, Deputy Commissioner Saravanakumar led a special team, including Inspector Revanthika and Sub-Inspectors Marimuthu, Uma, Manjula, along with Head Constables Karthi and Boopathi, to conduct surprise checks around Ukkadam, Periya Kadai Street, and areas surrounding the Koniyaamman Temple.

The operation resulted in the detention of three women found in suspicious circumstances. Upon investigation, it was revealed that Parvathi from Kovilpatti, Mandi Thoppu in Tuticorin district, along with Muthumari (28) and Aarthi (26) from Kinathukadavu, were allegedly targeting women in the festival crowd to commit jewelry theft. Parvathi, who had rented a house in the Perur area, along with her accomplices from Kinathukadavu, reportedly chose the dense festival gatherings as their hunting ground for snatching jewelry from unsuspecting victims.

Over the past week, several incidents of jewelry theft from women attending the festival came to light, with the special team successfully recovering 20 sovereigns of gold jewelry from the suspects. The swift action by the police not only led to the recovery of stolen property but also highlighted the effectiveness of the law enforcement's strategy to ensure the safety and security of festival-goers at such large public gatherings.

The operation sends a strong message against exploiting crowded events for criminal activities, ensuring that such cultural festivities remain safe and enjoyable for all attendees.
