Special Awareness Event Held at GKNM Hospital to Mark International Childhood Cancer Day

In observance of International Childhood Cancer Day on February 15, GKNM Hospital organized a special awareness event on February 17, emphasizing early detection and treatment for affected children and their families.

Coimbatore: Commemorating International Childhood Cancer Day, which is recognized globally on February 15 each year, GKNM Hospital hosted a special awareness event on February 17 aimed at enlightening the community on the critical importance of early detection and prompt treatment of cancer in children. Over 35 children undergoing treatment at GKNM Hospital, along with their families, participated in the event, underscoring the significance of awareness and support in the battle against childhood cancer.

Dr. Ragupathi Velusamy, the Chief Operating Officer of GKNM Hospital, presided over the event, which also saw the participation of the Human Resource Development Officer from Corporandum Universal Limited, Mr. Bhaskaran Kannoon, and several oncologists. The event highlighted the alarming statistic that each year, over 300,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide, with the incidence rate being significantly high in India as well.

Leukemia, a type of blood cancer, is notably prevalent among these cases, and the chances of successful treatment increase substantially with early diagnosis. Dr. Velusamy emphasized that the quality of cancer treatment in India has improved considerably, matching standards seen in Western countries, and stressed the need for such treatments to be accessible to every affected child.

The Valavadi Narayanasamy Cancer Center, established in 1958 under the GKNM Hospital in Coimbatore, now operates with state-of-the-art facilities and provides a range of concessions and completely free treatments for children with cancer, thanks to various donors and the GKNM Charity Trust. The event also recognized donors who have contributed significantly to societal change and awarded children with gifts and performances, highlighting the collective effort required to address childhood cancer.
