New Anti-Terrorism Unit Established in Coimbatore

Coimbatore sees the formation of a new Anti-Terrorism Unit, led by S.P. Sasimohan, with a team of 40 police personnel to tackle terrorism and related activities.

Coimbatore: A new Anti-Terrorism Unit has been established in Coimbatore, with S.P. Sasimohan appointed as its head. The unit, consisting of a D.S.P., 3 inspectors, and a total of 40 police personnel, will operate from the office located in Gandhipuram, which houses the CBCID and Special Investigation Division.

The unit's formation addresses the rising need for specialized attention to combat terrorism and related illegal activities. This division will handle cases related to terrorism across eight western districts of Tamil Nadu, including Tiruppur, The Nilgiris, Erode, and Salem. It will also investigate cases filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Arms Act.

Plans are underway to expand the unit to include 90 personnel and to build a separate building for its operations. Three potential sites have been shortlisted for this purpose.

The unit will also include specialized teams skilled in handling various types of weapons and intelligence gathering. It aims to create a comprehensive database of supporters of banned organizations and coordinate with intelligence units in other states for effective information sharing.
