High fares: Goods movement on Coimbatore-Singapore flight affected

Officials said that since the cargo handling fee on this flight is Rs 130 per kg, less cargo is being handled and more cargo is being transported from Trichy at Rs 100 per kg and Cochin at ₹70 per kg.

Coimbatore: The handling of goods on a flight from Coimbatore to Singapore has come down due to higher charges for handling of goods, officials said.

According to officials, on a flight from Coimbatore to Singapore, very little cargo is handled as the freight charges are fixed at a higher cost.

Flights are provided from Coimbatore to Singapore on all days of the week. The flight will land in Coimbatore at 7.45 pm every day and will again leave for Singapore at 8.45 pm.

The aircraft, which is packed with passenger seats on a daily basis, handles very little cargo. The main reason for the problem is the high fare in Coimbatore as compared to trichy and cochin airports.

According to Coimbatore airport officials, direct flights are available from Coimbatore to two foreign countries, including Sharjah and Singapore. Sharjah is operated five days a week. Each time, goods weighing 3 tonnes are transported.

But while flights are provided to Singapore on all days of the week, a maximum of 3 tonnes per week, and, in a few weeks, less than that cargo is handled.

For example, a fee of Rs 130 is charged for handling one kg of goods from Coimbatore. Only Rs 100 is charged in Trichy and Rs 70 in Cochin. Due to this, more cargo is being handled from Trichy and Cochin airports to Singapore.

The private airline is planning to open a dedicated office at coimbatore airport soon with an aim to increase the cargo handling capacity.

After the opening of the office, there is expected to be a change in the tariff currently levied for handling various goods from Coimbatore to Singapore, including engineering-oriented and food items. Officials said.
