Mahashivratri celebrations at city's Isha highlight Shiva as 'Cosmic Dancer'

Befitting the occasion, artists from various Indian states are due to showcase an electrifying performance consisting of music and dance as an ode to Shiva, the Cosmic Dancer.


Coimbatore:Coimbatore Isha is all set to celebrate Mahashivratri in all its glory in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, the land renowned for celebrating Shiva as the form of Nataraja - The Lord of Dance. Befitting the occasion, artists from various Indian states are due to showcase an eclectic performance consisting of music and dance as an ode to Shiva, the Cosmic Dancer.



Mahashivratri celebrations in Isha has carved a niche of own, since in many ways it reflects Shiva as Nataraja - the Cosmic Dancer, something very unique to Tamil culture. The form of Nataraja represents the exuberance of creation, the dance of creation which self-created itself from the eternal stillness. The idol of Nataraja standing at the Chidambaram temple is very symbolic of this absolute stillness.



Performances from artists such as Tamil folk singer Velmurugan, Rajasthani folk singer Mame Khan, renowned Sitar artist Niladri Kumar, and Tollywood playback singer Ram Miriyala amongst many others are expected to keep the devotees awake to keep an electrifying atmosphere throughout the night.



Also enthralling the audience with their vibrant performances will be Theyyam - The Fire Dancers from Kerala, Janapada dancers from Karnataka, and dancers from Georgia.



The Mahashivratri celebrations will be live-streamed on Isha's official YouTube channel Sadhguru Tamil from 6 pm on Feb 18th till 6 am the next day. It will also be streamed live in regional languages such as Hindi, English, Telugu, Kannada, and Marathi on leading television channels and YouTube channels. Last year, the Mahashivratri celebrations amassed 14 crore views, significantly higher than the Oscars.
