Kerala Govt. bans transportation of domesticated pigs; TN pig farmers protest in Coimbatore

Tamil Nadu's pig farmers staged a protest at Ettimadai in Coimbatore against the Kerala Government's ban on the movement of domesticated pigs from Tamil Nadu.

Coimbatore: There are around 2,000 pig pens across Tamil Nadu. A large number of pigs from Tamil Nadu are usually sent to Kelara. The pigs shipped from Tamil Nadu are of good quality and are approved by MPI and exported to 44 foreign countries.

For the last six months, there has been a ban on the movement of pigs from Tamil Nadu to Kerala. As a result, vehicles carrying pigs going to Kerala have been stopped and seized by the state's NGOs and handed over to the police. As a result, about 200 tonnes of pigs are lying in the pens since there has been no export of pigs to Kerala for the last six months. Farmers of Tamil Nadu's pig pens say that this has resulted in a loss of several crores of rupees in business.

A large number of pig farmers from various districts of Tamil Nadu staged a protest at Ettimadai on the Tamil Nadu-Kerala border, demanding that the Kerala government revoke the prohibitory orders on movement of pigs into Kerala. With Christmas and New Year approaching, exports to foreign countries have hit a hurdle. Slogans were raised at the protest demanding that the Kerala Government immediately lift the temporary ban on the movement of pigs from Tamil Nadu to Kerala.

The Tamil Nadu Government is in talks with the Kerala government in this regard. They have also demanded that the Central Government should issue a certificate of merit to the MPI and take steps to run these institutions in Tamil Nadu as well.
