CCMC Commissioner M Prathap has warned that people should not be directly or indirectly involved in the cleaning of septic tanks. He warned that if anyone violates the prohibitory law, appropriate legal action will be taken along with the imposition of fines and imprisonment.

Coimbatore: The Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation had imposed a complete ban on using human beings to clean underground sewers and septic tanks, as per the Prohibition of Manual Scavenging Act, 2013.

Adequate sewage absorbers and machines are presently in use on behalf of the Coimbatore Corporation to carry out these works. He warned that if anyone violates the prohibitory law, appropriate legal action will be taken along with the imposition of fines and imprisonment. "In the event of any loss of life due to this act, it is up to the concerned person to pay compensation not less than Rs. 15 lakh each to the families of each of the affected persons as per the order of the Supreme Court," warned the CCMC Commissioner.
