Rs. 27.6 lakh fine collected for drunken driving violations in Coimbatore; Case filed against 76 people

As many as 276 persons have been booked for drunken driving in Coimbatore and a sum of Rs.10,000 each has been collected totalling Rs. 27.6 lakh.


Coimbatore: In Tamil Nadu, the fine imposed on motor vehicle offenders was increased recently to Rs.10,000, Rs.1,000 for speeding and Rs.1,000 for not wearing a helmet.

A fine of Rs. 97 lakh has been imposed on 7,636 people who have committed motor vehicle violations in the last 24 days from October 24 to November 16. In particular, a fine of Rs. 29,000 has been imposed on 29 people who drove at high speed and Rs. 44,000 on 88 people who were carrying people in goods vehicles.

While the fine for drunken driving has been increased from Rs. 2,000 to Rs.10,000 in the last 24 days, 276 people have been fined Rs.10,000 each and Rs. 27.6 lakh for driving under the influence of alcohol. Similarly, 242 people who used their cell phones while driving were fined Rs.1,000 each and Rs. 2.4 lakh each, 714 people who jumped a signal were fined Rs. 500 each and Rs. 3.6 lakh each, and 5,892 people who did not wear helmets were fined Rs.1,000 each and Rs.58.9 lakh each.

In this regard, the officials said that the receipts of the fines imposed on those who violated road rules have been sent to those who have been registered. The penalty amount can also be paid online. Also, motorists can find if their vehicles have been fined through the mParivahan App.
