Valparai TANTEA estates closure controversy: Meeting held by Tea Estate Trade Union Federation to seek feedback from tea estate workers

Since the livelihood of more than 500 workers will be severely affected due to the closure of TANTEA estates in Valparai, tea estate workers have demanded Rs.25 lakh and a house for each of them as recompense.


Coimbatore: A meeting was held on Friday in Coimbatore under the chairmanship of Ameed, President of the Tea Estate Trade Union Federation to seek feedback from tea estate workers in the wake of the announcement that Valparai TANTEA estates will be closed down.



The meeting was attended by representatives from various organisations and political parties and trade unions. Soundara Pandian of LPF Union, Keshava Murugan Veeramani of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, Thangavel Senthilmurugan of BJP and 14th Ward members participated. Along with them, more than 100 workers from the estates of Cinchona, Periya Kallar, Chinna Kallar owned by TANTEA participated.



"TANTEA has announced that it is closing down its Valparai estates. There are more than 500 workers employed in these estates. Our children are studying in the areas but the management is asking us to leave the estate. We cannot move out of the area where we have always been working. If we have to leave, the TANTEA management should then give us Rs. 25 lakhs per worker and a house to live in to ensure our livelihood is not affected," opined the workers.

The Union representatives have assured the wrokers that they would convey their demands to the TANTEA management and arrive at a good decision.
