Mahila court sentences man to 5 years in jail for sexually assaulting minor girl in Ooty

Ooty Mahila Court Judge Narayanan sentenced a man to five years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 for sexually harassing a class VII student at Udhagai in the Nilgiris district.


The Nilgiris: The father of a class 7 student near Ooty was working as a labourer in the same locality.

The girl's father used to hand over the keys of the house to Srikanth, a neighbour, on his way to work every day.

On the day of the incident, the girl left school and went to Srikanth's house to get the keys. At that time, Srikanth sexually harassed the girl. The victim informed her parents about it.

Immediately, the girl's parents lodged a complaint at the Ooty Rural Women's Police Station. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Srikanth under the POCSO Act and conducted an investigation. Later, he was arrested and jailed.

The trial in the case was going on at the Ooty Women's Court, the final hearing in the case was over and the verdict in the case was pronounced yesterday.

Accordingly, Justice Narayanan sentenced srikanth to five years in jail and imposed a fine of Rs.10,000 on him.

If he fails to pay the fine, he will be sentenced to an additional six months in jail. Advocate Senthil Kumar appeared on behalf of the government in the case.
