Coimbatore: The city police have made an effort to set up street libraries in Coimbatore residences to prevent crime.

Police have made an effort to set up street libraries in selected residences to inculcate the habit of reading among the youth and prevent them from engaging in criminal activities.

Coimbatore Police Commissioner Balakrishnan walks in a residential area every day and interacts with the public. It was reported to the commissioner on behalf of the public that more than 100 youths roaming around in Rathinapuri and Kannappan Nagar area are breaking into groups and fighting and are addicted to alcohol and ganja.

A similar problem was found to exist in different residences. As a solution to this, Commissioner Balakrishnan has ordered the establishment of street libraries in residential areas. For this purpose, 77 slum areas including Rathinapuri, Kannappa Nagar, Airimedu, Amman Kulam, Puliyakulam, Pilliyarpuram, Selvapuram have been identified. 94 flats with cluster houses have also been identified.

These libraries will have comic books, educational stories, and useful books to develop knowledge. School children and teenagers can use these libraries. Police Commissioner Balakrishnan said that these libraries will be helpful in inculcating the habit of reading books among the youth, guiding them in good ways and not diverting their attention towards wrong activities.

With the help of sponsors, this library will be set up in each residence. Those who want to sponsor it can directly approach me in the office, he said.
