Madras High Court refuses to stay investigation against former Minister S P Velumani in tender scam case

In the tender scam case against former Minister S P Velumani for alleged irregularities in tenders and amassing wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income, the Madras High Court has rejected his plea seeking a stay.

Chennai: The Madras High Court on Friday refused to entertain S P Velumani's plea in seeking a stay on the trial in the tender scam case.

Alleging irregularities in inviting tenders for various works in Chennai and Coimbatore Corporations during the AIADMK rule, the Arappor Iyakkam and DMK Organising Secretary, R S Bharathi had filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking registration of a case against former AIADMK Minister, S P Velumani. Based on the petition, the Anti-Corruption Bureau registered a case against S P Velumani. Similarly, a case of disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs. 58 crores was also filed by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau.

S P Velumani filed a petition in the Madras High Court seeking an interim stay on the trial of these two cases to squash the cases. A bench comprising Chief Justice Munishwar Nath Bhandari and Justice N Mala heard the petition on Friday to decide whether it was fit for hearing. Additional Solicitor General S V Raju appeared on behalf of Velumani.

The judges then directed the Arappor Movement and the Anti-Corruption Bureau to file a reply by July 18 on whether the case was fit for hearing. The judges refused to accept S P Velumani's plea to stay the trial till then.
