Coimbatore: All parties staged a protest against the opening of a TASMAC store on Somanur Road in Coimbatore.

The TASMAC store had been set up a few years ago on the road from Karumathampatti to Somanur in Coimbatore district but locals protested which led to it being relocated. In this situation, work has begun to re-establish the existing Tasmac store on the existing site. Following this, the people of the area petitioned the Coimbatore District Collector, G S Sameeran and the TASMAC officials, urging them not to set up a TASMAC store where the children's healthcare center, school and church are located.

All parties, including the Congress, the BJP, the AIADMK, the Communists and the Congolese People's National Party staged a protest against the opening of the liquor store on Somanur Road, following reports that the store would be reopened in a few days.

More than 200 people attended and chanted slogans against the liquor store.

The protestors said that the safety of women in that area would be in question if the bar was set up and that there would be more illegal incidents of violence if the bar was reopened again. They also said that the establishment of a liquor store in the area should be halted, failing which they would hold various protests including a liquor store siege.
