Immolation bid of family thwarted by security guards at Tirupur District Collectorate

A woman, a resident of the Unchapalayam area in Tirupur district tried to set herself, her mother and children on fire demanding action against a relative who was trying to expropriate ancestral property.

Coimbatore: A woman's attempt to set herself, her mother and her children on fire at the District Collectorate in Tirupur, on Monday morning, was stopped by alert security guards on duty at the Collectorate campus.

Padmavathi who hails from the Palladam Unchappalayam area of the Tirupur district lives with her husband Manoj, son Manoj, daughter Saurabh and her mother Sundarambal. During her visit to the Grievance Camp at the Tirupur District Collector's Office on Monday morning, Padmavathi poured kerosene on her mother, children and herself, and tried to set herself on fire. The alert security guards at the Collectorate immediately snatched the kerosene can from Padmavathi and doused them with water.

Later, in the investigation with her, Padmavathi stated that their relative Nataraj from Sulur Pappampatti was trying to expropriate five acres of land that belonged to her family in Unchapalaiyam with the aid of fake documents. "On June 10, he came to our land with men and not only intimidated us but behaved rudely. We lodged a complaint with the Palladam police but no action was taken against him. So, I request the authorities to take appropriate action against Nataraj. My attempt at immolation was to highlight our predicament," she added.

The police have taken Padmavathi to the police station to further investigate the incident.
