Increasing contribution from wind farms in Tamil Nadu to meet growing electricity demand

With the early onset of the wind season in Tamil Nadu this year, high winds are expected in the following months which will lead to wind farms generating more than their usual expected quota of electricity.

Coimbatore: The amount of electricity generated by the wind farms in Tamil Nadu has shot up significantly due to the early onset of recent high winds. Up to 30 percent of the daily electricity requirement i.e., 4,500 MW of electricity is being generated and distributed by wind farms.

Renewable energy industries, including wind farms, play a key role in meeting the growing demand for electricity in the state. A wind power generation facility has been set up in Tamil Nadu to generate 8,600 MW of electricity. The wind season in Tamil Nadu which is usually from April to October started a month earlier than usual, on March 15, this year. Industry sources stated that with the onset of the wind season, the amount of electricity generated by wind farms has increased significantly.

Kasturirangayan, President, Indian Wind Power Generators Association (IWPA), said, "The average daily power supply in Tamil Nadu is 15,000 MW and above. The amount of electricity generated by the wind farms has increased significantly, given the fact that the wind season had started early this year. The wind farms fulfill about 30 percent of the daily electricity demand. That means 4,500 MW of electricity is provided daily through wind farms. In the following days, this contribution percentage will change.

The amount of electricity generated by wind farms will continue to increase because high winds are predicted to occur in the next three months. The renewable energy industry, including solar and wind power, is considered to be a gift from nature without harming the environment and all living things, including humans. Due to this, the Central and State Governments have given more importance to this sector and are implementing various schemes and projects regarding the same.”
