Coimbatore journalist killed in Uttarakhand road accident as van falls into gorge

Karthik Madhavan, a senior journalist working for the Coimbatore Hindu bureau, was killed in an road accident in Uttarakhand. He and another person died when the van they were travelling with 13 others lost control and fell into a 100-metre gorge


Coimbatore: Karthik Madhavan, a senior journalist of The Hindu’s Coimbatore bureau, was killed in a road accident on the Uttarakhand hills.

A group of 15 people went to Gangotri in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand in a van yesterday. While on the Gangotri National Highway last night, the van lost control and fell into a gorge about 100 feet from the side of the road.

Upon learning of the accident, the disaster rescue team went to the scene and descended into the abyss to rescue the victims.

Karthik Madhavan (45), a reporter for The Hindu, Coimbatore, and Alka Bode (46) from Aurangabad died on the spot.

Their body was recovered and sent to Uttarakhand Government Hospital for autopsy. 13 others were injured and are currently being treated at the hospital.

The death of a Coimbatore-based journalist in Uttarakhand has caused great grief among fellow journalists. Many journalists, volunteers and political figures are mourning his loss and fondly remembering the many working days with him.
