Penalty for not setting up internal complaints committees at places where women work - district administration

Complaints committees should be set up compulsorily in places where women work. The Coimbatore district administration has warned of a fine of Rs 50,000 on those companies if they fail to do so.


Coimbatore: The Coimbatore district administration has announced that an internal complaints committee should be set up at the places where women work, failing which fines will be imposed.

A statement issued by the district administration said, the central and state governments have enacted several schemes and laws for the safety of women.

Accordingly, the Prevention of Sexual Violence faced by Working Women Act, 2013 was enacted by the Central Government to prevent sexual violence faced by women at the workplace.

An internal complaints committee should be set up in all government departments and private institutions to look into the sexual violence faced by women working under the Act. A woman officer should be appointed as the chairperson of the internal complaints committee so constituted.

Two persons should be included as members and an NGO well known in the field should be included as members, it said, adding that the modalities for the investigation should also be included.

Every government department, government schools, government colleges, government hospitals, government factories, government training institutes and every private factory, IT companies, small and medium enterprises, an Internal Complaints Committee should be constituted at the head of the department in training institutes, sales outlets, private schools, private colleges, cloth shops, jewellery shops, other outlets and all places where more than 10 women are employed.

Internal Complaints Committee It is also requested to immediately constitute an Internal Complaints Committee in all the Head Offices and send the details to the District Social Welfare Officer, Coimbatore, at the District Collectorate.

Companies or founders who do not have an internal complaints committee will be fined Rs 50,000 as per the Prohibition of Sexual Harassment faced by women at workplace Act, 2013.
