Devotees can scale Velliangiri hills for pilgrimage from today

Devotees are allowed to climb Vellingiri hill from today.

Coimbatore: The forest department has given permission for the Poondi-Velliangiri hill trek from today.

Coimbatore Poondi-Velliangiri Temple has a self-made Shiva lingam on the top of the seventh hill. The forest department has given permission to the devotees to go there and pay obeisance to Lord for four months from February to May. It was banned last year due to coronavirus. The ban was extended to February this year. Hindu organizations demanded that the trek be allowed as thousands of people were attending political meetings otherwise.

The Forest Department held a consultation meeting on the 18th and on behalf of the Poondi temple administration a tender of Rs. 42.50 lakhs was issued for the Girimalai undiyal. Devotees were wondering as to whether permission would be granted for the trek. A special consultation meeting was held at the Boluvampatti Forest Department office yesterday evening and it was announced that the first Poondi trek will start today. Itis to be noted that the tribals have been given permission to set up 40 shops on the way to the hill.
