Chennai: The Tamil Nadu State government has cancelled the Std 10 Board exams for 2020. All class 10 students stand promoted.

The TN Chief Minister in a recent announcement confirmed the exams which were scheduled from June 15. The students will be promoted to the next class, he told. "Marks will be calculated based 80% on half-yearly exam results and 20% on attendance", the CM added. He further announced that all pending exams for classes 11 and 12 exams are being cancelled too.

It may be recalled that the Madras High Court adjourned the hearing of a public interest litigation that was filed against government's decision to hold TN Public to June 11. A two-member bench comprising Justices Vineet Kothari and R. Suresh Kumar heard the pleas of both the sides.

The PIL was filed by Tamil Nadu High and Higher Secondary School Grade Teachers Association. While the TN government responded that the exams have been scheduled at the right time as experts predict that' COVID-19 cases could humoungously rise up in the days to come and then it would become even more difficult to conduct exams.

The bench then argued back that when the government has made the decision not to open educational institutions till the virus subsides, why is it bent on forcing Std 10 students to write the exams. The court also questioned the TN government if it can give an undertaking for the safety of the students. "The examination will move to risk the lives of 9 lakh students", the Justice opined.

The bench then adjourned the case proceedings to June 11. Several political parties, especially DMK and their allies have been vehemently opposing the government's decision to hold public exams when the COVID numbers keep reaching astromical heights everyday. It may be recalled that a majority of students and parents have been demanding cancellation of the board exams.
