New Delhi: All train services in the country barring goods trains have been barred from operating till March 31st to curb the spread of Covid-19, a government statement said on Sunday.

New Delhi: All train services in the country barring goods trains have been barred from operating till March 31st to curb the spread of Covid-19, a government statement said on Sunday. 

“In continuation of the measures taken in the wake of Covid-19, it has been decided that the cancellation of all passenger train services on Indian Railways and Konkan Railway shall be extended till 31st March,” the statement said. 

The directive will stop movement of around 12,500 trains. “Some sub-urban trains, around 500 in number, will continue to operate,” a railway official said. 



To make it more convenient for the passengers, full refund for all cancelled trains may be taken till June 21, 2020, the statement added. 

Around 9,000 goods trains are run by the national transporter each day. 

This comes while 3,500 to 4,000 train services were already affected on Sunday amid the janta curfew imposed nationwide. Total number of Covid-19 cases in India inched closer to 350 on Sunday. 

The Indian Railways operates around 9,000 passenger trains and 3,500 mail express services each day. 

Trains which had commenced their journey prior to 4 am arch 22nd, will run up to their destinations. 

“Zonal railways are advised to ensure strict adherence to the above instructions,” the railway ministry directive said.
