Coimbatore: District Collector K Rajamani chaired a coordination committee meeting on Monday to discuss on the preventive measures regarding bird flu.

Following an outbreak of bird flu at two poultry farms in Kerala's Kozhikode district, prompting authorities to order culling of 12,000 ducks and hens within one km radius of the affected areas, the health officials here have geared up measures due to the close proximity of the city to Kerala border.

Addressing the meeting, the District Collector said, "Avian flu has already spread in the neighbouring state of Kerala. In order to be safe, proactive preventive measures have been taken. Polutry farm owners have been advised to take stringent measures to prevent the onset of the Avian flu in their farms. In case of the spread of the flu, they can reach out to the Animal Husbandry Department and get information regarding the measures to be taken."

He added that the farm owners have been directed to inform the Animal Husbandry department, if the death rates of birds are high.

"Close to 12 check posts have been established at the borders of the State and all the vehicles carrying poultry and feed are being closely monitored and disinfectants are being sprayed. Farm owners must extend their support to the Health Department officials who inspect the poultry and test them for any signs of disease spread", he informed.

"Proactive measures to combat the disease include, a count of 1200 protective gear and 838 survival equipment, which are kept ready. Also, 20 flash teams (consisting of 4 members) have been formed to monitor the situation", the Collector informed.

The Collector urged the people not to panic and assured that the situation is under control.
