Coimbatore: The mountain train service between Mettupalayam and Ooty has been cancelled until November 24 according to an announcement made by the Southern Railway.

Coimbatore: The mountain train service between Mettupalayam and Ooty has been cancelled until November 24 according to an announcement made by the Southern Railway.

With heavy rains causing frequent landslides in the district, there has been recurrent cancellation of the mountain train which passes through dense forests and mountainous terrain. In the event of a landslide, boulders fall across the railway track and damage it.

In the last two months, the NMR service has been cancelled more than seven times, with the train sometimes having to be halted midway. Restoration of the track had just been completed with the the train service expected to resume today.

However, the continuous rains in Coonoor has caused more landslides and as a precautionary measure the Southern Railway has announced that the mountain train service will stand cancelled for another week, until November 24. Tourists who have had prior booking on the NMR have been greatly disappointed due to the constant disruption of the regular NMR service owing to heavy rains and landslides.
