Coimbatore : With the Coimbatore Medical Government Hospital (CMCH) getting crowder day by day, the announcement of opening a 500-bedded hospital within the premises of the Coimbatore Medical College situated on Avinashi road has come a breather for the people and the students of the college who need not anymore travel amidst the traffic to the GH on Trichy road for practical sessions.

Earlier, the ministry had proposed to start hospitals within the premises of the government medical colleges and in view of that the same, it was proposed to start a 500-bedded hospital at Rs. 120 crore here in the city which is presently been approved and works are about to commence, official sources confirmed, today.

The decision has been sanctioned keeping in mind the UG medical students who presently travel over 8 kms to reach the CMCH for their practical sessions. Now with this decision, the travel time of the UG medical students would be drastically reduced and importantly the excess inpatient and outpatient crowd to CMCH would be diverted to the new facility, noted Dean B.Asokan.

The cost for constructing the structure would be shared between the centre and the state. While the former would contribute 60% of the funds, the latter would take up the remaining 40% of the cost.

It may be recalled that the State's policy decision to increase six more medical colleges in TN has been approved by the centre.

New medical colleges will be built in Ramanathapuram, Virudhunagar, Nilgiris, Dindigul, Tirupur and Namakkal. And, preliminary works have already begun, confirmed Health Minister, C. Vijayabaskar during a press meet in October.

It may be recalled that the state has 23 colleges and runs three Category B institutions (Raja Muthiah Medical College, ESIC Medical College, KK Nagar and IRT Medical College, Perundurai).
