Coimbatore: As per police sources, cases will be filed against people who light fireworks apart from the timings specified by the Government during Diwali celebrations.

In a concerted effort to curb environmental pollution during Diwali, public welfare cases were filed in Court against lighting of fireworks. In support of the good cause, the Government released a time schedule last year with rules to be adhered to, while lighting fireworks. Police had also made several arrests on defaulters.

Cases filed last year across Tamil Nadu during Diwali:

A total of 2100 cases were filed last year. The Government of Tamil Nadu issued an order that the lighting of fireworks will be allowed only from 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm, on the day of Diwali. Police say the order will be applicable for this year too.

"Cases will be registered at the police stations in the respective areas where people light fireworks apart from the specified timings. The respective police station guards and patrol vehicles have been ordered to monitor the situation," stated a police official.
