All public water distribution systems should be disinfected using chlorine - District Collector

Coimbatore : District Collector, K. Rajamani, who inspected the progress of rural development department projects in the areas of Sarkar Samakulam Panchayat Union in Coimbatore district, advised the residents to ensure that their surroundings are clean sans water stagnation.

The District Collector who visited the reconstructed Karakuttai water channel in Keeranatham Panchyat union here which was built under the Chief Minister's Kudimaramathu program, advised the officials to strengthen the bund by widening and planting trees. 



The district collector later visited the Slum Clearance Board's housing unit in Keeranatham and enquired the inmates about their concerns. Responding to their concerns, the District Collector ordered the concerned officials to clean the surroundings twice a week by appointing sanitary workers, placing appropriate garbage bins and to provide drinking water at regular intervals.

He also instructed the officials to operate TNSTC buses in the morning and evening to facilitate easy access to school and college going students. He also inspected the drinking water tanks stored by the residents in the area and ordered the officials to provide only chlorinated drinking water, owing to the north-east monsoon. He also advised the Panchayat officials to ensure cleanliness and sanitation in the area. 

Addressing the officials, the Collector ordered that the chlorine level in water should be 0.02ppm and should be distributed at regular intervals. He further added that chlorine should be added in open water sources like wells, overhead tanks clean and make sure that the public does not leave coconut shells, tyres and other unwanted materials in open that could stagnate water. 

He reinstated that dengue mosquitos must be destroyed at source. The district collector to administer mosquito repellent gas and medicines to be sprayed in areas which have stagnant water and remove unwanted materials in empty ground and private buildings, removal of weeds in ponds and regular maintenance of rainwater harvesting structures. 

Women's Self Help Group members, school/college students and volunteers should be involved in public awareness campaigns by distributing leaflets, processions to raise awareness of communicable diseases during monsoons. 

He also advised the civic authorities to provide the public with Nilavembu drink to prevent the spread of infectious diseases such as dengue fever.

The district collector later inspected the public distribution shops at Kondayampalayam. He also inspected the ongoing road works at a cost of Rs. 1.90 crores from Vayampalayam to Agrahara Samakulam and checked the level of chlorine in the drinking water by tasting water from the public tap in the area. 

Later, he inspected the road works in Vellamadai Panchayat being laid at a budget of Rs. 46.28 lakhs, desilting of water body and ordered to plant palm trees around the bund area. He also asked the authorities to place boards to prevent littering in the area.

Ramesh Kumar, Project Director, District Rural Development Department, Executive Engineer Pasupathi, Regional Development Officers, Dhanalakshmi, Lata and Thasildhar Chandra were present.
