Water released from Pykara, flood alert issued in Moyar river in Masinagudi

The Nilgiris : Owing to torrential rains in several parts of the Nilgiris district including Ooty, Avalanche, Gudalur, Pandalur, Naduvattom, water level has reached the maximum capacity of 110 feet in Pykara Dam.

As a result of which excess water is being released at the rate of 1756 cubic feet per second, as per the orders by the District Administration. 



Similarly, 1056 cubic feet of water per second is being released from Glenmorgan dam resulting in flooding of Moyar river flowing through the Mudumalai tiger reserve and its branches flowing through Masinagudi. The Mayar river originates from a small town called Mayar off the Masinagudi–Ooty road. 



Hence, the Masinagudi panchayat has issued a flood alert to the people living near the banks through loudspeakers and by directly visiting their houses. Mahouts taking care of elephants at Theppakadu elephant camp have been advised not to bathe the elephants in the Moyar river, until further notified.
