Coimbatore: To mark World Water Day on March 22, 'World Water Day 2023' was organized by the Water Technology Centre of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University on Wednesday.

The event was presided over by Dr. M Raveendran, Director of Research, TNAU. In his presidential address, Dr. M Raveendran highlighted that globally 2.2 million people lack access to safely-managed drinking water.

"Worldwide, 2.63 million people spend more than 30 minutes collecting water. With many water resources drying up and becoming more polluted, flooding is getting more common everywhere. As per the international norms, countries with per capita availability less than 1700 m 3 per year are categorized as water-stressed with per capita available water of 1545 m 3. India is already a water-stressed country.

Being an agrarian country, the largest user of irrigation is India with a lion's share of 78 percent of total water requirement followed by the domestic sector at 6 percent and industrial sector at 5 percent. To value water resources, we need to understand that climate change, pollution and growing demand for water contributes to its scarcity. It is high time to protect and value water as a resource.

A typical pair of jeans takes 10,000 litres of water to produce, equal to what a person drinks in 10 years. Hence, it is every citizen's responsibility to consume water, use it as a sustainable product and consume less water for manufacturing, and not pollute water resources," he reiterated.

Dr. S Pazhanivelan, Director, Water Technology Centre, TNAU, Coimbatore welcomed all the dignitaries who participated in the function with introductory remarks. Dr. C Swaminathan, Professor, TNAU concluded the event with a vote of thanks.
