Coimbatore: Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner Katta Ravi Teja launched an awareness walk on September 25, 2026, urging residents in Ward 38 of the West Zone to segregate household waste into four categories before handing it over to sanitation workers.
The walk covered the stretch from Kalveerampalayam School to Bommanampalayam Temple under Ward 38 of the Coimbatore Corporation West Zone. As part of the initiative, corporation staff dressed in colours representing the four types of waste bins, wet waste in green, dry waste in blue, sanitary waste in red, and hazardous waste in black, walked through the area to spread awareness among the public about proper waste segregation before handing it over to sanitation workers.
More than 100 people, including volunteers from the Oliyum Kovai organisation, Anivera organisation, Maharani Sangam, GKS Sangam, along with members of the public and corporation officials and staff, took part in the walk, which was inaugurated by the Commissioner.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner said that awareness on segregating waste into four categories is being continuously created among the public under Coimbatore Corporation. He said the public has been informed that wet waste should be separated into green bins, dry waste into blue bins, sanitary waste into red bins, and hazardous waste into black bins, and handed over properly to sanitation workers, and that awareness activities are being carried out accordingly.
He noted that several volunteers and members of the public in the West Zone had come forward on their own not only to take part in the awareness walk but also to pledge that they would segregate waste at their own homes into four categories. He extended his appreciation and congratulations to those who dressed according to the four bin colours to create this awareness. He also requested them to take the lead in creating similar awareness among the public in their own residential areas so that waste segregation into four categories is followed there as well.
Following this, the Commissioner pasted awareness stickers about four-way waste segregation on 20-litre water bottles and on vehicles to further spread the message.
The event was attended by West Zone Chairperson K A Deivayanai Tamilmarai, Corporation Health Officer Dr Subashkanthi, Executive Engineer Jegan, Assistant Executive Engineer Savitha, Zonal Health Officer Radhakrishnan, Health Inspector Ramesh, along with corporation officials, staff and volunteers.
