The special teams formed to nab the accused in the Vellalore chain-snatching case arrested two college students and seized four sovereigns of gold jewellery, two mobile phones and the two-wheeler allegedly used in the crime. The duo were produced before the court and remanded in judicial custody.
Coimbatore: Two college students were arrested by Podanur police in connection with the alleged chain-snatching of an elderly woman in Coimbatore’s Vellalore area.
Police seized approximately four sovereigns of gold jewellery, two mobile phones and the TVS Jupiter allegedly used in the crime.
According to police, on the evening of August 30, Saraswathi, an elderly woman, was sitting and conversing with her relatives near the Vellalore Karikkadai bus stop. A masked man approached her and enquired about the opening hours of a nearby clinic and the location of the doctor’s residence.
When Saraswathi reportedly pointed towards a nearby road, the masked man allegedly snatched the gold chain from her neck and fled the scene. She lost her balance and fell to the ground following the incident and was subsequently assisted by people nearby.
Based on her complaint, Podanur police registered a case and launched an investigation.
Following directions from the Coimbatore City Police Commissioner, three special teams were formed to trace the suspects. The teams examined CCTV footage from the scene of the crime and surrounding areas, through which they identified the registration number of the TVS Jupiter allegedly used in the offence.
Further analysis of CCTV footage along the suspected route of the vehicle helped police track the movements of the suspects.
According to police, the investigation revealed that a male and female college student, who were reportedly in a relationship, had allegedly planned to target elderly women for their jewellery. Police said the duo had been observing elderly women in the Vellalore area before carrying out the alleged offence.
On the day of the incident, the male student allegedly wore a mask, approached Saraswathi near the bus stop and engaged her in conversation to divert her attention before allegedly snatching her chain and fleeing the scene.
Based on the CCTV footage, police first arrested the female student, Sindhu. Following information obtained during her interrogation, the special team traced and arrested Bharanidharan (21), the male student, who was staying at a private college hostel near K.G. Chavadi.
