Left Support Pushes Vijay Closer to Majority; All Eyes Now on VCK’s Crucial Seat

Support from the CPI and CPI(M) could take Vijay-led TVK close to the majority mark, with all eyes now on the VCK’s decision amid intense political negotiations in Chennai.

Coimbatore: Tamil Nadu’s post-election political landscape witnessed fresh developments on Friday as the CPI and CPI(M) held crucial State secretariat meetings in Chennai to decide their stand on government formation in the State following the fractured Assembly verdict.

According to sources, the Left parties are inclined to back Vijay-led Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), a move that could significantly strengthen the party’s claim to form the next government.

TVK emerged as the single largest party in the Assembly elections with 108 seats, but still remains short of the majority mark of 118 in the 234-member House. Congress has already announced support to TVK, taking the alliance tally closer to the required number.

The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which won two seats, is also expected to take a decision after consultations with the Left parties. Sources said the VCK leadership is closely monitoring the outcome of the CPI and CPI(M) meetings before announcing its stand.

Political observers believe that letters of support from the Left parties and VCK could clear the path for Vijay to formally stake claim to form the government. Reports indicate that the Governor has insisted on proof of majority support before extending an invitation to form the government.

The uncertainty over government formation has triggered intense political activity across Tamil Nadu over the past two days. Congress and TVK cadres staged protests accusing the Governor of delaying the process despite TVK emerging as the single largest party.

Meanwhile, speculation over possible political realignments involving the DMK and AIADMK has further heightened the suspense surrounding the formation of the next government.

With the CPI and CPI(M) now seen moving closer towards backing TVK, political attention has shifted to the VCK’s final decision, with the party’s support expected to play a crucial role in Tamil Nadu’s government formation battle.
