Coimbatore: A major fire accident was averted when an electric pole suddenly caught fire near Somanaur Bus Stand today (April 27) afternoon, causing widespread panic among onlookers and commuters in the area.

The incident occurred during the afternoon hours when an electric pole located in close proximity to the busy bus stand suddenly burst into flames. Thick smoke and sparks emanating from the pole created a tense situation in the locality, raising fears of a potential disaster.

Fortunately, since the incident took place during the afternoon when public movement was relatively minimal compared to peak hours, any untoward incidents or casualties were successfully avoided. The timing of the fire played a crucial role in preventing what could have been a major tragedy, as bus stands typically witness heavy footfall during morning and evening rush hours.

Upon receiving information about the fire, electricity board officials rushed to the spot and immediately disconnected the power supply to the affected area. This swift action helped prevent the fire from spreading further and eliminated the risk of electrocution to people in the vicinity.

Fire and rescue services personnel arrived at the scene promptly and undertook firefighting operations to bring the blaze under control. The fire brigade team worked efficiently to completely extinguish the flames and ensure that the situation was brought under complete control without any damage to nearby properties or harm to the public.

Officials have attributed the incident to the increasing impact of summer heat in the region. With temperatures soaring in Coimbatore and surrounding areas, electrical infrastructure is under significant stress, leading to such incidents.

Authorities have advised the general public to remain alert and exercise caution in view of the rising intensity of summer heat. They have also assured that regular inspections of electrical installations in public places will be intensified to prevent such incidents in the future.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of regular maintenance of electrical infrastructure, especially during extreme weather conditions. Local residents have expressed relief that the fire occurred during off-peak hours, preventing what could have been a major disaster at the busy bus stand.
