Elephant Census Begins in Mettupalayam Forest Area

Elephant counting activities have started today, May 23, in the dense forests of Mettupalayam and Sirumugai under the Coimbatore Forest Division, indicating an increase in elephant population and migration from neighboring regions.


Coimbatore: In a significant wildlife conservation effort, the forest department has initiated an elephant census in the dense forests of Mettupalayam and Sirumugai, which are part of the Coimbatore Forest Division. This region has seen an influx of elephants, following migration paths from nearby Kerala forests.


Under the supervision of Forest Officer Joseph Stalin, five teams comprising forest officials and assistants from the Central Wildlife Training Institute have separated into divisions like Jagganari, Kallar, Nellimolai, Sundappatti, and Kandiyur to monitor and count the elephant movements meticulously. Similar activities are led by Officer Manoj in areas such as Odanthurai, Koothamandi North and South, Pethikuttai, and Kunjappanai Uliyoor.
