Deriving its name from a little village named 'Avalanche', which was formed due to a landslide that happened in 1823, this primeval lake is one of the calmer holiday spots tucked away from the clamor of Udhagamandalam Township. Avalanche Sanctuary, as it's known, resides 23 km away from Ooty and is a scenic habitation to visit anytime during the year. The Avalanche Lake is believed to sport the magnificence of 'Pangong Tso Lake' in Ladakh and is known to change colors with seasons.
Offering stunning views of the valley, as well as the nearby dam, the lake is a true countryside nirvana. It's surrounded by blue mountains (Nilgiris) with the sight of blooming flowers, vegetation and waterfalls all around. The very dense Shola Forest encircles the lake and forms the perfect camping ground for tourists.

How To Reach
The journey from Ooty to Avalanche is tricky, as the condition of the roads and the path itself is troublesome. Although private vehicles are prohibited inside the sanctuary, a visit to the lake is not a problem. Prior to reaching the lake, you need to register the vehicle details at the check post. Once you are in, you can either hire a Jeep or a Mini-bus, both operated by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department. The safari is conducted as two-hours rides usually, run between 9am to 3pm. The ride takes you through the infamous Cauliflower Forest, origins of River Bhavani, Bhavani Amman Temple, finishing off with Lakkidi, which offers a beautiful panoramic view of the river Bhavani. The wildlife sightings are very rare. A forest rest house provides basic accommodation for people who want to avail it.
