The Amaravathi Dam is located on SH17, 96 kms from Coimbatore. The route by road from Coimbatore would be - Pollachi - Udumalpet, from there travel south towards Amaravathynagar.
The dam was built primarily for irrigation and flood control and now also has four megawatts of electrical generating capacity installed. Notable amount of Mugger Crocodiles are found at the reservoir and at the catchment areas of the dam.
The Amaravathi Sagar Crocodile Farm was established in the year 1976, is the largest crocodile nursery and is located just 1 km before the dam. There are now 98 crocodiles (25 male + 73 female) maintained in captivity here. The well maintained children's park and boating at the catchment area attracts lots of tourist around the year.
The park and crocodile farm are open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
