Punjab's Gurindervir sets national record in 100 m sprints in 16th Junior Federation Cup

Coimbatore: It was a big moment for the 18-year-old sprinter who ascertained his supremacy as the fastest junior athlete in the country while erasing the previous Indian U20 mark with a huge margin in 10.47 secs in 100m sprint final held here on Saturday.

Coimbatore: It was a big moment for the 18-year-old sprinter who ascertained his supremacy as the fastest junior athlete in the country while erasing the previous Indian U20 mark with a huge margin in 10.47 secs in 100m sprint final held here on Saturday.

The event though scheduled for Friday had to be postponed to Saturday morning due to lack of light in the Nehru Stadium.

Already enjoying the "star status" after having crowned the Asian (U18) Youth title at Bangkok last year, Gurindervir exhibits excellent athleticism to stop the clock in an impressive 10.47 secs.

In doing so he improved the previous official National (U20) Indian record held in the name of Tamil Nadu's Augustine Yesudoss by 0.10 secs!

Among the Indians, Piyush Pandey was the first U20 athlete to clock 10.57 secs way back in 2000.  Karnataka's Mohammed Mudassir emulated the same three years later.  Although Mudassir clocked 10.56s the same year, during the Grand Prix in Thiruvananthapuram, the mark was not ratified due to want of doping control.

Both Pandey and Mudassir registered 10.57s while taking part in the senior categories.  However, Yesudas did so in the now defunct national inter-zone junior championships held at Kochi in 2013.

With the current form, Gurindervir is expected to be among the medalists in the upcoming Asian U20 championships at Gifu, Japan, this summer.

The following are the top sprinters in the U20 category in Asia this season--

10.25  Lalu Mohammed Zohri (Indonesia)

10.46  Muhd Zulfiqar Ismail (Malaysia)

10.46  Abdul Hakim Sani Brown (Japan)

10.47  Muhammad Haiqal Hanafi (Malaysia)

10.47  Gurindervir Singh (India)
