First round qualifying athletic competitions at the district level were conducted by Indian Speed Star, III Season, along with Gail India of the Department of Central Petroleum and National Youth Cooperative System, at Nehru stadium, today.

According to the National Youth Cooperative System qualifying competitions are held at 115 centres all over the country to identify good sportspersons. It was expected that 2000 candidates would participate from the Nilgiris, Tirupur, Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Coimbatore districts. But actually, the number of participants was just above 100.

Vanathi Srinivasan inaugurated the competitions and without showing her disappointment and left immediately. Sports lovers are unhappy that many of those such as Coimbatore district’s sports officer, the M.L.A of Coimbatore South Constituency and others, whose names are found in the invitation, did not attend the function. When the coordinators of this event were asked about the reason for such a poor turn-out, they said that the simultaneous conduct of competitions at various places may be a reason.
