The All Girls Kabaddi team from Coimbatore is desperately looking for sponsors to pay their entry fee to participate in the 4th National Championship 2021
Coimbatore: The 18-member All Girls Kabaddi team from Coimbatore is racing against time to arrange for funds to participate in the 4th National Championship 2021 that is to held from August 6 to 8.
The team has been practising for the competition for the last four months and have been intensively practising with their coach. The team is unfazed by the competition that awaits them but the team headed by coach G Sathish Kumar is experiencing sleepless nights since they are unable to pay the entry fee to participate in the three-day competition.
SimpliCity caught up with the team in between one of their practice sessions on Friday. “The girls are doing well. We are confident that we will not return home empty-handed. We are racing against time to pay the entry fee. We welcome sponsors to support our team,†requested Coach G Sathish Kumar.
The train tickets (to and fro) have been reportedly booked thanks to sponsors, while uniforms and accessories that are required to play the game have been sourced through funds donated by known people. The deadline for paying the entry fee was July 20 and hence the Coach has requested the organisers for more time to arrange for funds. The organising committee has obliged to his request. The team needs to pay an entry fee of Rs. 4,000 per player and since they have missed the deadline to pay the fee, an additional sum of Rs. 500 is payable as fine, for each player.
An extremely worried Kabaddi player-turned-Coach G Sathish Kumar is determined not to give up and is confident of seeing the light at the end of a seemingly dark tunnel. He is optimistic that his team of girls will make it to the competition.
This is the first time that a team trained by Sathish Kumar is participating in the National Championship. The sporting event is organised annually and 2021 is the 4th edition of the games. Both track and field games will be played at the three-day national contest. The All Girls Kabaddi team from Coimbatore will compete with 16 teams from across the county.

With the team making desperate attempts to arrange for funds on the one hand, the spirit and the morale in the team remains high and the players are undeterred. At the Valarpirai Sports Foundation, the girls practise for three hours every morning and for another three hours in the evenings. The Foundation which is located in Ramanathapuram here was founded by G Sathish Kumar in 2002. He teaches the nearly-forgotten sport, for free. When quizzed as to why not many are interested in learning Kabaddi, the 45-year old Coach states that urban children are lured by sports and games that are glamorous.
"The team of girls who are all set to participate in the 4th National Championship 2021 are from economically-challenged backgrounds. Thus, paying the entry fee for the contest is a challenge for them. The All Girls Kabaddi team understands the value of the sport and are emotionally attached to it, and hence it reflects in the way they play," opines the emotional Coach.
Those who are interested in supporting the team can make a donation in cash to 98430-11191 through Google Pay.
