Coimbatore: A school student from Mettupalayam who won the gold and set a record at the National Level Karate Competition held at Guwahati in Assam last week was given a rousing reception on his return. His parents, school management and a crowd of onlookers cheered him as he returned to home turf after winning the gold.

The National Level Karate Competition had over 400 male and female players from 17 states including Tamil Nadu participating in the competition. Melwin Joseph from Onnipalayam in Mettupalayam studying in Ooty Public School participated in the 11-14 years category. The competition was held in the knockout format and Melwin Joseph played strategically from the beginning of the competition.
He beat his opponent from Assam to win the gold medal and set a record. Melwin Joseph who returned to Mettupalayam today was given a rousing reception by his parents and his school management with a crowd of onlookers.
