The Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) has planned to set up Sports Clubs in village and town panchayats in the State to unearth sports talent at the grassroot level.

SDAT under the Amma Youth Sports Scheme has planned to set up these Sports Clubs for Kabaddi, Volleyball, Ball Badminton and Cricket in 12,584 village panchayats and 528 town panchayats across Tamil Nadu.
In Coimbatore, as many as 228 village panchayats and 37 town panchayats will have Sports Clubs for boys and girls between 15-35 years of age. The Sports Club will comprise of a dressing room and gym equipment. Rs. 65.24 crores has been allotted by the State Government to set up a Sports Club in every panchayat. Funds for village panchayats will be used from MGNREGA (Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act) and for town panchayats, a general fund will be used.
In every panchayat, athletes will be selected and provided sports training under this scheme. The selected players will take part in the block level tournaments and winners will qualify to represent district level tournaments and from thereon to state level tournaments which will be conducted by the Tamil Nadu Government.
SDAT is going all out to reach the panchayats to promote sports and are presently scouring for grounds to set up courts for kabaddi and volleyball, and proper space for laying cricket practice nets and ball badminton courts in every panchayat, with the help of Panchayat Secretaries.
Talking exclusively to Simplicity, R P Ravichandran, the District Sports Officer and Youth Welfare Officer, Coimbatore said, "This initiative by the State Government has been taken to bring out fresh talent from small villages and towns, and to help them qualify for higher level competitions. This initiative also aims to bring out leadership quality, team work and identifying their potential to help them pursue a career in sports," he added.
