The 19-year-old lad from Coimbatore District Badminton Association is one among the top junior badminton players in the country.

Recently, Sathish Kumar clinched gold in the All India Junior Ranking Badminton tournament held at Bangalore which earned him a spot to represent Indian team in World Championship. In a tournament organised by Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy where more than 400 participated in singles U19, City's young champion, Sathish Kumar lifted the trophy. He defeated Telangana's Pranav Rao Gandhan in the finals by 15-21, 21-18, and 24-22 in singles and secured bronze in mixed doubles, teaming up with Karnataka's C V Ramya.

The last six months was like golden period for this young champ, as he bagged 4 national medals including a gold in singles and 4 bronzes in mixed doubles category.

Sathish Kumar is also a swimmer and represented State level competitions in his early stages. Later, inspired by his cousin Arun Kumar, a national level badminton player, Sathish decided to take badminton, as his career and began practicing.

He started his career under coach N.Venkatesh, with whom he learnt the basics of the game. He was under the guidance of Coach Venkatesh for four years. In his initial stages of career, he failed several time in State and National level competitions which made him prepare stronger and practice tirelessly towards perfection.

To pursue his career, Sathish moved to Malaysia for training and was trained in Malaysia for a year and shifted to Asian Badminton Centre at Hyderabad, six months ago.

Talking to Simplicity, Sathish Kumar stated that, "It was not an easy journey for me in badminton. I never tasted any easy success in my early days. I participated in many districts and state level competitions but had no success. There were numerous ups and downs in the my career but I kept working towards my goal to clinch gold at National level competitions."

"I used to practice around 11 hours a day in the Asian badminton academy. I whole-heartedly credit my coaches Shankar Annamalai and Vivek for their contribution in my career. I am preparing myself to clinch gold at the Junior world championship at Russia. As this is my last year to represent in Junior level championships, am working hard to win gold for my country at this world Championship" he added.

He also credits his Father, Karunakaran and mother Jayanthi for their relentless support in helping him through his ups and downs. Sathish concluded by extending his gratitude to Coimbatore district badminton association for their continued support.
