Coimbatore: Over 3,000 participated in the Child Labour Awareness marathon with lot of enthusiasm which was held at the PRS ground.
The marathon was jointly organized by National Child Labour Abolition Project and Fusion Media Entertainment.
It was flagged off by TV actors Sanjeev and Ashok and was held in four categories, including 10 km, 5 km, 3 km and 1 km.
Former child labourers, student victims of child labour, recalled the recuperation precess and their experiences, the assistance they got from the Tamil Nadu Government and the self-confidence they have gained now.
District Collector K.Rajamani speaking on the occasion said "After Chennai, Coimbatore is best in the Industry and Education sector in Tamil Nadu. Children should not be employed because of poverty and social conditions. Such programs are necessary to create awareness among the public to let them know that the Tamil Nadu Government has provided all the facilities and opportunities to educate children".
"It is commendable that 3,000 participants took part in the awareness marathon organized by the National Child Labour Abolition Project and the private company," he said stressing the need to eliminate child labour.
Pamphlets were circulated to create an awareness to educated how child workers were exploited in various industries. The incidence of child labour can be brought to notice of Central Government by accessing the website www.pencil.gov.in and the District Collector on his office phone number 0422-2305445.
Subsequently, the prizes were awarded to the winners of the competitions and the Young Achievement Awards were presented to the former child labourers who were rescued and are not graduates.
