Coimbatore's veteran athletes bag 21 medals in Women's 'Masters Athletics Championship' in Goa

Coimbatore : The city's women veteran athletes did Coimbatore proud by clinching 21 medals in the 1st National Women's Masters Athletics Championship held at the Bambolim Stadium in Goa. The Championship was organised by the Goa Masters Athletics Association.

Coimbatore : The city's women veteran athletes did Coimbatore proud by clinching 21 medals in the 1st National Women's Masters Athletics Championship held at the Bambolim Stadium in Goa. The Championship was organised by the Goa Masters Athletics Association. 

Masters Athletics is a class of the sport of athletics for veteran athletes in the events of track and field, road running and cross country running. The competitions feature five-year age groups beginning from age 35. Men as old as 105 and women in their 100s too have competed from across the world in running, jumping and throwing events. Masters are sometimes known as veterans.



In India, this is the first ever national meet for women masters athletes. The Meet featured around 700 athletes from across the country. The Tamil Nadu contingent had 111 participants, including 30 participants from Coimbatore.

The Coimbatore women masters athletes bagged 10 gold, six silver and five bronze medals in the overall championship, while Tamil Nadu secured 93 medals comprising of 32 gold, 31 silver and 30 bronze medals in the Meet.



The seasoned veteran athletes from the city who bagged medals in their respective categories were Vasanthi M (2 gold), Koneswari R (1 silver and 2 bronze), Sarithadevi A (1 gold), Krishnaveni P (1 bronze), Gayathri P (1 gold and silver), Sreelekha (1 silver and bronze), Vijayalakshmi A (2 gold), Kanmani Sheela Rani (1 silver), Roseline L (1 bronze), Kugalur Palanisamy Shanthi ( 1 gold and 2 silver), Sivagami Balasundaram (2 gold) and Balamani S (1 gold). 

V Balasundaram, the President of the Coimbatore District Masters Athletic Association and R Radhamani, the Secretary of Coimbatore District Masters Athletic Association congratulated the winners.
