Coimbatore: Poonthazhir and Tharun of Mettupalayam bagged gold and bronze medal in the Asian level Karate championship held at Myanmar recently.
With this Poonthazhir becomes the first ever from Tamil Nadu to win gold at Asian level competitions.

More than 300 participants from 14 countries including Africa, Europe and America took part in the competition in which two students from Mettupalayam grabbed the opportunity and showcased their talent to won medals in the international arena.
Poonthazhir participated in 12-14 years category under 40 kilograms and had won all the four consecutive matches to qualify to finals, where she faced opponent from China and defeated her with ease, to clinch the gold for the first time in an international championship.
In boys category, Tharun of Mettupalayam secured bronze medals, while Sanjay of Salem clinched gold. Around 26 students represented India in Asian Karate Championship at Myanmar in which Tamil Nadu's karate kids emerged successful bringing laurels to the State.
Poonthazhir, Tharun and Sanjay from Salem are now qualified to take part in the international karate championship to be held at Germany in 2022.
