Southern Railways Women team beat defending champions in All India Basketball tournament opener

Coimbatore: The Southern Railways kick-started their campaign in style defeating defending champions, Kerala State Electricity Board in a close contest.

They won by six points in the women's section of the All India Basketball tournament for the C.R.I pump trophy, here at the Coimbatore District Basketball Association's court on Monday



Southern Railways were right on target, right from the start of the game. The Chennai team kept themselves busy scoring points and restricted the defending champions from striking early. At the end of the first half of the opener, Southern Railways had a healthy lead of 13 points. Their dominance continued in the third quarter too, to score 15 points to extend their lead further.



Though the defending champions fought hard in the final quarter, Southern Railways had complete control over the game even in the later part of the match, when they clinched a victory by 6 points in the opener.

Top score : Southern Railways - Raja Priya Dharshini 12 - (12), Dharshini 5 - (10), Alagu Tamil Mozhi 8 (10), Anitha Paul Durai 16 - (14). KSEB - Anajana 4 - (15), Roja mol 12 - (10).



In the men's category, Indian Air Force and Coimbatore District Basketball Association clashed in the opening game of the 54th All India Basketball tournament for the Nachimuthu Gounder trophy. The Indian Air Force team thrashed CDBA team by 13 points. IAF dominated the city boys throughout the match. 



In the first quarter, IAF scored 29 points while CDBA opened their account only in the 6th minute of the game. IAF kept scoring points in every quarter of the game and extended their lead to 26 points at the end of the second quarter. 



Though the city boys came back in the game to put up a fight, they were no match for the strong IAF team.
